Physical Education & Sport

At St.Therese of Lisieux Primary School we have a passion for Physical Education (PE) and Sports; we believe that PE is an essential part of a child’s educational development and we aim to offer a breadth of experiences to our children. They have opportunities to participate in activities such as games, dance, gymnastics and athletics and competitive sports within our Trust. Every child is included in PE and they are encouraged to be the best that they can be.

Children learn about PE in a variety of ways through Maths, Science, Literacy and other subjects. Our children understand that PE is not a stand-alone lesson but that they can be learning about PE in the classroom indoors and in the outdoor environment. At St Therese of Lisieux we promote the values of respect, teamwork, sportsmanship, resilience, equality and inspiration.  We aim to give the children knowledge, skills and motivation to establish and maintain a healthy lifestyle and enjoyment of physical activity and sport that will lead to lifelong participation.

PE Passport is used to encourage children to review and reflect on their learning through the use of video recording. Self-assessment is also widely encouraged while staff use Assessment for Learning strategies. By implementing a monitoring and reviewing assessment system of PE, we can measure the impact and progress of the quality and provision within our school, which will lead to overall whole school improvement.

Swimming
Since 1994, swimming and water safety has been a statutory element of the National Curriculum for Physical Education in England. This means that every 11-year old child should leave primary school with the skills to keep themselves safe while enjoying swimming with friends and family. The three National Curriculum outcomes state that all schools must provide swimming instruction either in Key Stage One or Key Stage Two and that children must:

– swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
– use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke] – perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 pupils attend a block of swimming lessons at Ingleby Barwick Leisure Centre. If your child is unable to complete any of the above then they will be expected to take part in swimming lessons before they leave St Therese of Lisieux at the end of Year 6. This is a National requirement for your child.
