Art & Design
Intent
At St Therese, we believe that Art is a vital part of children’s education, with a significant and valuable role in the taught curriculum and the opportunities we offer our pupils. The Art curriculum will develop children’s creative abilities, as well as knowing more of their own and others’ cultural heritages through the study of a diverse range of artists. As pupils progress, they should know more and remember how Art and Design reflects and shapes our history, and how it contributes to the culture, creativity and wealth of our world.
Children will develop their knowledge of Art with effective teaching and carefully planned sequences of lessons and experiences. They should know and remember more about the visual elements of Art and Design (line, tone, texture, colour, pattern, shape, 3D form) which are developed by our curriculum and enable children to reach their full creative potential. The curriculum is focused on 6 key areas: drawing, painting, printing, textiles and sculpture and collage. All Art topics are linked to other foundation subjects to enhance the quality and depth of learning. Lessons are purposeful and are planned to build on and consolidate any previous knowledge. Children will be able to develop their knowledge by building upon vocabulary learnt from EYFS through to Year 6.
We want to:
- Help our children learn through careful sequenced planning which develops:
- secure substantive practical knowledge: learning how we make art
- substantive theoretical knowledge: learning the knowledge of art and its history
- disciplinary Knowledge: learning what art is (Knowledge of how quality and value have been expressed by experts)
- Develop disciplinary knowledge so pupils learn from varying art forms and eras – Traditional, Modern, Contemporary
- Be ambitious and help our pupils by improving their Fluency – pupils becoming proficient in the application of their knowledge
- Provide opportunities for pupils to experiment: pupils trying out ideas, methods to find original solutions.
- Develop Authenticity: so pupils can visually perform their thinking of an issue, topic or theme.
- Ensure our pupils learn all aspects of the National Curriculum
- Plan learning so it is organised and sequenced to help our pupils increase in knowledge
- Help children remember the core knowledge over time
- Be ambitious for our pupils so they develop fluency of skills, experiment with methods and authenticate and try out their ideas.
- Ensure EYFS gives our children a strong starting point so there is creativity there and it gives pupils the building blocks for their learning in KS1 and KS2
- Have ambition for all so the curriculum content is not reduced for children with SEND
How will we know if we are successful?
- Pupils can talk about their learning and are knowledgeable about the materials they could use and refer back to previous learning.
- Pupils visit places of interest and do not see art as something isolated in a classroom.
- Teachers will teach pupils to make, design and improve work which represents their own ideas.
- Pupils can plan out their work and are confident in their ability to talk about their designs and plans and intentions for making.
- Pupils enjoy talking about their previous work and showing examples of where they have improved.
- Pupils develop the key knowledge they need to succeed and improve in Art and can remember this.
