Welcome to Year Three

In our class we encourage everyone to be the very best that they can be.  It is important that everyone feels happy and safe and loves coming to school each day!  Our learning is exciting and challenging as we are developing new and existing knowledge, skills and understanding and we always want to take pride in everything we do.

Now we have made the transition from Key Stage 1, each of us has a responsibility to help one another become familiar with this new environment and the new expectations for a Key Stage 2 pupil. As we continue on the next phase of our learning journey, we know that it is important to develop independence, resilience, confidence and responsibility. We take every opportunity to demonstrate the ‘Secrets of Success’ during our time in school, pushing ourselves, working hard and trying new things.

We recognise individual talents and develop confidence so every child is motivated, inspired and enjoys learning. We have some very exciting learning projects this year starting with a geography-based project of ‘Mountains and Volcanoes’. In which we locate and learn about the greatest mountains, both near and far, as well as the structure of the earth and plate tectonics, before finding out about how mountains and volcanoes are formed.

See our curriculum overview for Year 3 below.

 Equipment requirements for Year Three

As we are especially looking to developing independence and maturity this year, it is important that all pupils take responsibility for coming to school each day organised and equipped to learn.

  • Pupils should bring a clean, freshly filled water bottle and a packed lunch (if applicable).
  • Pupils require a small wipeable pencil case with basic stationery, which can be identified as their own.

Year Three children need their PE kit in every day

See uniform requirements for further details.

Homework

Spelling lists will be posted on Google Classroom. Spellings are taught within a 2-week cycle. During week 1, the children will explore a spelling rule and pick their 10 spellings to be tested at the end of the 2-week cycle on a Friday. A paper copy of the spelling list can be sent home the previous week if requested.

We encourage reading for pleasure with school books and books chosen from home and would appreciate it if you could leave a brief comment in the reading record at least 3-4 times a week.

Other short weekly homework tasks include:

  • Completing 5 reads and 1 vocabulary task on ‘Reading Plus’ – the children will have the opportunity to complete reads in school but the rest must be achieved at home.
  • Complete tasks and practise times table recall facts on ‘Times Table Rockstars’.

Here are the links to the sites:

Please click here for Reading Plus Guidance for Parents.

If you are having difficulty accessing any of these sites, please contact the school as quickly as possible so the issue can be resolved for your child.

Fruit

Year 3 children no longer receive free fruit in school. As the morning is quite long, I would encourage your child to bring a piece of fruit to school to enjoy during their morning break.

Year Group Expectations

Year Group Expectations provide information for parents and carers on the end of year expectations for children in our school. The National Curriculum outlines these expectations as being the minimum requirements your child must meet in order to ensure continued progress. The year group expectations can be found here
