Welcome to Year 1

A very warm welcome to Year 1 – a year of exciting learning opportunities and endless fun! In Year 1 we are working hard to be the best we can be. To do this, we are following the secrets to success which are to improve, push ourselves, try new things, never give up, understand others, concentrate and imagine within all that we do. Now that we have transitioned from Reception to KS1, we are working hard to become more independent with our learning.

In Year 1, we love to share our talents and gifts with each other as we know we are all unique and special in our own way.

We have some exciting topics this year starting with ‘Childhood’. We can’t wait to share our learning journey with you.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact any member of the Year 1 team and we will be happy to help.

See the download section below to access our curriculum overview for Year 1.

Homework

In Key Stage 1, we send home a half termly ‘Homework Menu’ which is linked to our topic. It is up to you and your child how many tasks you wish to complete; maybe you want to do one in detail (as a large main course), or try a few if you’ve got a big appetite for homework (starters and dessert!). They can be handed in as and when you complete them over the course of the half term. They will be shared with the class and displayed as part of our topic work.

In addition to this, weekly homework will be assigned on their Google Classroom which will consist of 1 piece of Maths, Literacy or a phonics based activity which is allocated on a Friday and we ask that this could be submitted through Google Classroom by the following Thursday.

Reading Books

Pupils will be allocated a weekly E-Book through their Bug Club account to read at home every Friday until the following Friday. Pupils also have a reading book within school which they read with a teacher. In addition to this, there is also an online Reading Record which is accessible through Google Classrooms.

Year Group Expectations

Year Group Expectations provide information for parents and carers on the end of year expectations for children in our school. The National Curriculum outlines these expectations as being the minimum requirements your child must meet in order to ensure continued progress. The year group expectations can be found here

Equipment for Year 1

Pupils will need…

A small wipeable pencil case with basic stationery which can be identified as their own.

A clean, freshly filled water bottle.

We will be having PE every Monday and Thursday.  For PE kit please see the uniform section of our website.
